Rough Start
Hangovers the mornings before Chiefs tailgates. The storyline in the movie Apacalypto. Warheads sour hard candies. These are things that start out pretty rough but turn sweeter as you go. The dull ache in the back of your head as you wake up and stumble out of bed knowing that you have less than an hour before its time to leave to get in line at Arrowhead Drive. The you know what scenes that Jaguar Paw and Company have to suffer through as they are taken prisoner. The shockingly tart first taste of the warhead that pulls your cheeks into a cartoonish pucker face. A 78-0 loss to cross state rival and returning National Champion St Louis Bombers. These things are painful opening events, but they happen. Who all in this town hasn’t gotten a bit away from themselves on the eve of a home game? Who hasn’t been awoken by the spears of a raiding party from a far off murderous city tribe? Let the man in the sour free candy house throw the first stone.
But things start to get better. The hair of the dog starts to work its way in and do its thing. The smell of the charcoal and the sizzle sounds of the first meat of the day going on the grill start to round off the sharper edges of the negative sensory overload that is your hangover. The stroke of luck of a lifetime happens as a solar eclipse develops right as it is your time to get sacrificed. The warheads radioactive coating begins to subside. Movement in the right direction. Well folks, that is where we are at this very moment. Your Kansas City Blues are beginning to take the first steps toward the redemptive arc of the movie. That begins with recognizing that there were some positives from the weekend. Multiple Blues D1 first minutes were had. The lineout was solid. There were good runs and scoring chances. Colombian winger Arley Urrata had multiple line breaking moments. The Blues family showed up to support with a surprisingly large crowd for a home game that was 50 miles from home. The D2 side put some salve on the wound after the D1 game with a motivated performance that resulted in a W for the day. Reid Franke, Fabi Bortolotti, Luke Christensen, Tom Murphy and Chaz Donnici all contributed with tries. It was a day salvager and the organization thanks the members of the D2 that were able to go out and put the earlier events behind them and play ball.
Then what happens is the tailgate gets into full swing, maybe a shooter of fireball goes down the hatch, the gates open the game starts and the Chiefs Beat the Hell Out of You, You, You, You YOU YOU. Then Jaguar paw escapes and blazes a parade of dead bad guys through the jungle back to his village to rescue his wife and kid. Then the Blues go on the road to Chicago and put together a much improved effort and compete with the Lions to try to secure a big win to turn their season around. That’s how the Hollywood stories unfolds. Let’s see how our story does.
